2009 - May 4th - Kendall's 11th Birthday ... Harry Potter Style

Kendall is growing up! Our first grandchild turned 11 … too hard to believe! For this Birthday, Kendall chose to have a Harry Potter themed party and cake. The grandparents took the challenge! Harry Potter decorations were not easy to find; if only the next film were out it would have been much simpler! We were able to find one Harry Potter figurine pushing his cart with his owl in it at our trusty cake decorating store. They always seem to come through when we can find nothing at other places.

We thought we'd use a decorative bunt pan to make our version of the Hogwart's School, the castle looking place of higher learning. To keep the shape with all of the angles, I made a chocolate ganache icing to pour over the cake and let set up. It turned out fabulous … an ice cream cone was added as the main tower peak with Hershey "Hugs" Kisses for tower decorations. The rest of the cake employed our famous meringue icing that is loved by all. To add some depth, evergreen trees were added with Harry wheeling his cart toward Hogwarts on a path defined with chocolate rock candy in many different colorful shades. After much worry, the cake turned out better than I had anticipated.

Kendall looked like Hermione to the tee. She had her magical broom, a wand and the famous Hogwart's cloak. A fun time was had by all. Many Hogwart's students were at the party.

The games in the back yard included catching the Golden Snitch. Everyone love that! Toping off the festivities was the "Sorting Hat" that spoke to each person who wore it. That was some amazing magic when the hat talked and specifically to each individual! The participants were divided into the four houses: Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
