Once again we drove down to Julian for the Apple Festival celebration. We always enjoy going through the hills with all of the trees and removal from LA traffic. It's about a 90 minute drive, but really beautiful. Thirty years ago we would go down in that area to camp. At that time, in Santa Ysabel there was a small bakery called Dudley's. Over the years we have watched it grow to a large building baking massive amounts of bread. We can better get the loaves we want now than back in the days of limited baking! They bake about 20 different kinds of bread, from wheat, multi grain, Irish potato, JalapeƱo, apple-nut, cheddar cheese and more. We always have to stop and buy some even though we know we'll have to freeze part of it … we always over-buy!
The Julian Apple Pie Company several years ago also built a large bakery next door to Dudley's where they now make the pies and drive them the 7 miles to Julian for their famous pie store and restaurant. We also buy those pies to bring home! We stopped at Eric & Shirley's and dropped off two original pies for them and brought home an all natural for us. Buy we also ate pie while in Julian!
Julian is a historic little gold mining town that has apple orchards in the hills. Many of the homes have turned into shops and there is a great array of touristy items to latch on to. It is a one street town, no traffic signal at all. The town is about 4 blocks long.
The old drug store has the original wooden mirrored soda fountain with stools. They make malted milks and cherry colas from scratch. The hardware store has everything you need for home repairs or camping … every size of cast iron Dutch oven and skillet you can imagine.
It's a fun place to spend the day and worth the drive. We go usually every other year and the other year to Glen Oak, another Apple Country highlight.
We stopped in at a couple of the back-woods casinos on the way home to get a bite to eat. Mary Anne made her $20 into $38 on her first quarter, so we called it a day!
