2010 February 27th - The Making of the Penguins

Penguins were the theme for Jordan's 10th birthday, so we went on a quest on how to make something different. We ran upon a recipe to make penguins from cupcakes, mini-doughnuts, and doughnut holes. The process takes a while, but the results were what we wanted, so it was well worth it.

First step is to "glue" the cupcake to the mini-doughnut to the doughnut hole with some delicious home-make chocolate gnash.

Then set these in the freezer to chill.

Then add some chocolate icing around the cupcake and min-doughnut to smooth out the body, and again back to the freezer to get really cold.

Warm up some chocolate icing that has been tinted black with food coloring paste. I used a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup about ¾ full and warmed in the microwave for 20 to 25 seconds and then stirred for smoothness. Dip the "penguin" body in the chocolate (just like Dairy Queen does their chocolate covered cones!).

Add the candy eyes and keep refrigerated while cutting out the beaks and feet from Starburst candies.

Let the penguins come to room temperature while cutting out the white fondant to make their stomachs.

Cut in half the thin chocolate wafer cookies to make the wings. Then put on the beaks and feet and glue on the wings with a dap of icing. There ya go … a fabulous penguin!
