2018 - October 17th - Acadia National Park, New Harbor and Bar Harbor, Maine

After a good night's sleep and a nice breakfast in Portland, we headed to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine. We drove the beautiful countryside of Maine with many Fall colors surrounding us. We took in a lot of nature along the hour and half or so drive to the entrance. Acadia National Park is located in the state of Maine, southwest of Bar Harbor. The park reserves most of Mount Desert Island and its associated smaller islands along the coast of Maine. Acadia National Park is the oldest national park in the United States east of the Mississippi River and is the only one in the Northeast United States.
This day is really all outdoors with everything nature has to offer, We get to see many of the changing leaves in the robust yellows, goldens, browns, rusts and red colors mixed with the shades of greens. It is all so spectacular.
We drove the Acadia Park Loop Road and were able to see The North and South Bubbles, Acadia's famous mountains at Jordan Pond. They are so prominent on the northern horizon and reflected on the surface of the pond that they rule the visual terrain. The North Bubble has the highest elevation at 872 feet. The South Bubble follows at 766 feet.
Next to Jordan Pond and The Bubbles, we passed Eagle Lake and all of her beauty!
Continuing on The Acadia Park Loop Drive, we passed over the 2,120 foot long cable-stayed Penobscot Narrows Bridge over the Penobscot River. The modern design stands out in this nature setting!
On our journey to Acadia's Thunder Hole we passed many beautiful sights …
Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! They say on calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. Well, we were one of those who saw Thunder Hole on a calm day! But the scenery was great and looking at where the water comes into Thunder Hole leads to the imagination of the 40 foot spurts of water and loud clamoring of water against the rocks!
Thunder Hole Views from Thunder Hole Sandra and Ray at Thunder Hole Our drive to Bar Harbor took us through some beautiful land of Maine. We had a gorgeous ride to evening destination. We arrived in Bar Harbor and found our lovely accommodations for the night, Primrose Place. It was a setting right out of a book … pretty, quaint and unique. We really enjoyed being here for this night.
We walked into town, only a six or so block walk. It was getting chilly on our way there and was really cold when we finished dinner and walked back to the Primrose! The village of Bar Harbor (which we were corrected on our pronunciation when checking into the Primrose … Bar Harbor is pronounced "Baa Haabaa") is the essential New England town that you think of. Small shops lined next to each other with lots of lobster signage throughout the area. In fact, on our way back to Primrose Place, we passed one store open late with an end of the season closing sale with everything on sale. We picked up really warm gloves, hats and earmuffs at the closing for the season price of three items for twenty-five dollars! Best investment of the trip! We found the delightful Galyn's to make a reservation for a fabulous dinner! We are now in the most eastern part of the United States, on the Atlantic Ocean, in New England, with the freshest just-caught -today lobster … what more could we ask?!?! When dinner was served, it was spectacular. Sandra selected "Lazy Lobster" - four and a half ounces of pealed fresh local lobster over rice with asparagus. Mary Anne had the local fresh-made Maine Crab Cakes, rice, asparagus and a slightly spiced dipping sauce. But the big-guns, Ray and Larry ordered the special … an over two pound local freshly caught lobster with rice and asparagus! We were all in Heaven!!! The taste was outlandish!!! The guys were bibbed-up for the lobster dinner …
