2021 - June 3rd - Rancho Los Alamitos

We had the privilege of having Ruby with us Tuesday through Thursday this week while her Dad was on a business trip out of town and Mom was at her work. Ruby's online school was over at 1:30 as an early day on Thursday so the three of us went over to Rancho Los Alamitos as a close-by outing. We hadn't been there for about two years. The Rancho is still following Covid-19 protocols with required reservations and the use of face masks. The Rancho Casa is closed, but the gardens, grounds and barns are open with volunteer docents scattered around to answer any questions. We talked with several including a garden expert, blacksmith and animal caretaker.
To keep all visitors moving in the same direction and keeping physical distancing per Covid guidelines, we started our walking tour by entering the garden path taking us around the property. The stream next to the path that we walk is gently flowing water. It is magical calmness for an extraordinary stroll!
We always love the cactus garden with all of the varieties with shapes and blooms. We were not disappointed! We also got a peak of the Rancho Main House while walking the garden trail.
As we approach the Rancho tennis courts, the magnificent arbors appear. Too early for the grape one to be full, but they are stunning to look at. The towering palm trees enhance this part of the gardens as well.
We exit the cactus garden to enjoy the yard and the outside of the Rancho house. The huge Moreton Bay Fig trees corner each side of the enclosed porch. These trees are believed to be planted around 1900 which makes them 121 years old, plus or minus! The roots are fascinating to look at. The trees have multiple trunks which are intertwined and make these trees look even larger than they actually are known to be.
The walkway next to the house took us to the manicured gardens of flowers. The settings are gorgeous. We really enjoyed all of the outdoor sights we had on this walking tour.
We were able to walk the courtyard of the home, peek through the windows and enjoy the flowers which adorn this lovely space.
We strolled the farm enjoying the buildings including the blacksmith shop, dairy barn, storage, tack room and animal quarters. Chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, horses and the crowning glory of all, the magnificent Shire Stallion!
